I came to know Mark Cooper through my association with Doug Lensgraf. It was my desire to start doing spinal injections within my practice. In order to do this we were in the process of adding a million-dollar addition to our building.
Approximately 6 months before moving into our new building, my numbers started falling flat. It was rather unnerving moving into a million-dollar addition when my practice was bombing. So I called Mark and we started working on a game plan of getting my numbers backup. First off we fired my media buyer and hired a new firm. Next we started negotiating with our local newspaper. I told Mark my media budget had been around $14,000 a month, but I was willing to spend about $24,000 a month to get things back on track. Mark told me to have the media buyer to do on television buys and I would negotiate with the local newspaper.
Mark tutored me on what I should say and how I should say it to newspaper. I walked into the meeting immediately told the sales rep that I was not going to pay card rate and I did not want their monthly special. I told them I wanted a half page vertical on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, I needed right hand read, and in the A section of the paper. The funny thing is I didn’t even know what a half page vertical was at the time, but because I was saying exactly what Mark Cooper had told me to say it sounded like I knew what I was talking about.
Before leaving the rep stated they would get back to me with the costs of my campaign. Mark stated, no matter what they came back with, tell her that it wasn’t good enough. They e-mailed me saying that the cost of a single day was over $5000 making a weekly campaign over $15,000. We went back and forth over the costs, all the while, Mark was telling me what to say.
Long story short, we negotiated the cost down to $3000 a week. That saved me $12,000 per week on the campaign. Of course, I would not have done at those outrageous cost, but now I have a relationship with the newspaper that is cost-effective.
I now don’t make a move in reference to my advertising without first discussing it with Mark Cooper.
